Future Goals

As Travel Green Wisconsin moves into its third year, the Wisconsin Department of Tourism is committed to increasing both the industry's participation in the program and the marketing benefits that its participants receive. While we realize that some may be skeptical of the "green" movement's staying power, it is our firm belief that the current interest in sustainability is not just a fad. After all, virtually no "experts" are predicting a drop in fuel or energy prices, nor does anyone expect consumer demand for clean air and water to decrease. While the Travel Green Wisconsin certification program isn't the sole solution to our sustainability problem, it can play a role in helping turn the tide against environmental deterioration. As more tourism businesses adopt sustainable practices and more travelers become educated about what they can do, our industry will play an increasingly significant role in protecting the bountiful natural resources, cultural authenticity and socialfabric that make Wisconsin a unique tourism destination.

The Wisconsin Department of Tourism is looking at other programs beyond the Travel Green Wisconsin certification program to help develop a more sustainable tourism industry in this state. As such, we invite you to check back with us in the near future and learn about new developments as they happen. In the meantime, we will work toward strengthening our current certification program to meet the demands of travelers and the travel/tourism industry.
To that end, we will:

  • Update the Travel Green Wisconsin Checklist
  • Reevaluate the Travel Green Wisconsin certification process
  • Continue to aggressively build participation among the state's tourism industry

We look forward to working toward these goals with you.
